For gout sufferers, the last thing they want after going through the pain of a gout flare-up is another gout flare-up, and the diet is very important in this regard.

Gout is caused by a build up of uric acid in the joints, and uric acid is produced by the breakdown of a natural substance called ‘purines’. Purines are natural substances found in all of the body’s cells and virtually all foods, but only certain foods contain a concentrated amount of them. While the body normally balances the excessive purines through urine, sometimes the body simply can’t keep up with all of it, and that’s when uric acid crystallizes and gout strikes.

So, what are these high-purine foods?

#1: Beer and Alcohol:

Beer is by and large the worst form of alcohol for gout. It’s has a high purine content, but what makes it a double-whammy is that alcohol also prevents the kidneys from getting rid of purines through urine. Here’s what a study from The Lancet Medical Journal has to say about it:

​ “Men who drank the most alcohol daily had twice the risk of developing the disorder as men who did not drink. Beer drinkers increased their risk by 50% for every daily serving, while those who drank hard liquor increased their risk by 15% for each drink. Men who drank wine did not appear to increase their risk for gout, although few men had more than two glasses of wine daily so these results are less conclusive.”

While avoiding alcohol altogether is your best bet, wine has the lowest purine content and smallest association with gout...but, there is another beverage which might be just as potentially harmful:

#2: Sugary Drinks

They taste so good but they do you and your health no favors, especially when it comes to staying gout-free. WebMD cites a study of 755 men who developed gout and compared their surveyed responses regarding soft-drinks:

​ “Compared with men who almost never drank sugar-sweetened soft drinks -- fewer than one per month -- frequent soft-drink drinkers were significantly more likely to suffer gout: ● Two or more soft drinks each day upped gout risk by 85%. ● One soft drink each day upped gout risk by 45%. ● Five or six soft drinks each week upped gout risk by 29%.”

Meats: Bacon, Turkey, Veal, Venison, Liver, Kidney, Beef, Chicken, Duck, Pork and Ham.

Seafood: Anchovies, Sardines, Herring, Mussels, Codfish, Scallops, Trout, Haddock, Crab, Lobster, Oysters, and Shrimp.

For those of us who’ve suffered from gout...this can be a little disheartening...that’s a LOT of different foods to avoid or even moderately enjoy. No one wants to cut into a steak with a sinking feeling of anxiety that it might cause another gout flare-up…

And according to WebMD:

​ “Studies show that people who have suffered a first attack of gout have a 62% chance of suffering another within a year. The odds climb to almost 80% within two years.” “"Over time, repeated attacks can eat into bone and cartilage, causing permanent damage to affected joints," says rheumatologist Herbert Baraf, MD, clinical professor of medicine at George Washington University.”
